The following covers the meeting on Feb. 13. Note: This week’s meeting was held in Northrup 318. CLIMATE CHECK The Senator emeritus Kara McLean, senior, asked about resident hall access for students living off-campus. McLean said that last semester, she was able to enter halls like Lightner Residence Hall with her TigerCard, but that as of two weeks ago, she and several others who live off-campus could no longer do so. There is a one in 9.2 quintillion chance of correctly guessing every game in the NCAA championship tournament. To win, that means predicting every upset and every No. 1 seed dethroned in the first round. While my bracket is, as they say, “busted” (thanks, Virginia. And Arizona. And Xavier), I can at least take pride in my bracket being better than Obama’s. And I can celebrate that the Final Four is in San Antonio this year,...

Campus Planning and Sustainability is in the process of transitioning residence hall recycling bins to a ‘dual stream’ recycling program. Instead of separating paper, cardboard, aluminum and plastic, students will be able to recycle aluminum, plastic and glass in one bin. Paper and cardboard will still have to be separated. The program will also introduce glass recycling into residence halls. The change comes due to the inefficiencies of the previous method. Only 12.3 percent of all...

The office of Residential Life is kicking off the spring semester with a long to-do list. Along with day-to-day operations dealing with student issues, conducting programming and doing regular administrative work, the office has begun a search for a new director, has implemented changes to the newly acquired City Vista apartment complex and is making preparations for a new housing assignment software system. Winner: Bird Bakery Finalists: Bakery Lorraine, Nothing Bundt Cakes OK, I get it — the cupcakes are delicious. The tables are twee. I saw peach and blueberry cobblers, gluten-free brownies, even tomato pies, but no Armie, the husband of Bird Bakery founder Elizabeth Chambers. Known for his Parent Trap turn in “The Social...

Students organized Trinity’s first Activism Fair as a part of Trinity’s MLK Week celebration. Approximately a dozen activist organizations from across San Antonio visited campus, including MOVE San Antonio, RAICES and Haven for Hope, all intending to encourage students to volunteer off campus. Simone Washington, sophomore SGA senator, was one of the event organizers and referenced the white supremacist protests that occurred in Charlottesville last August as a source of inspiration for encouraging activism. Washington came...

Proposed plans for tax reform are currently making their way through the United States House of Congress and the Senate. While there are still many hurdles to clear, the bills could impose a 1.4 percent tax on net investment income derived from private universities’ endowments — including Trinity’s. The proposed tax would apply to private schools with at least 500 enrolled students, with the House bill qualifying universities with endowments at over $100,000 per student...

Fall of 2017 brought significant changes to Trinity’s upper administration. Two new hires, Tess Coody-Anders, vice president for strategic communications and marketing, and Jim Bradley, chief information officer, joined Trinity’s staff, each expressing immense excitement for their new roles. The two brand new positions were created in conjunction following the departure of Chuck White, vice president for information resources, marketing and communication. An administrative audit and faculty panel suggested that White’s role be divided into...
