DeclassifiedDeclassified: How to sustain yourself in college

Making sure you feed yourself in the next four years

When I was in my fall semester of my first year at Trinity, I ran out of Bonus Bucks by November. Although this was back in the olden days when exchanging your meal swipes for bonus bucks didn’t exist, it’s still a problem many underclassmen face. Make sure to allow yourself a certain amount of Bonus Bucks to spend both per month and per week. Notice that your food spending habits happen to line up with both your class schedule and the Revolve schedule and plan accordingly. If all else fails and you still run out, make sure you’re friends with some nice upperclassmen you can leech off of!

Share Meals

Here’s something not a lot of people do — get a friend and split a meal! Buy two different meals and try each other’s. You save some Bonus Bucks and get more food!

Check the Mabee Menu

Although not always accurate, the Mabee menu online will often reflect what is available for the week. If you know you’re a picky eater or have many dietary restrictions, it’s best to not waste your time (your meal swipes or your precious Bonus Bucks) going to Mabee just to not eat anything.

Know the POD Stocking Schedule

One of the worst feelings in the world is having on-campus dining closed for the weekend, hating the options at Mabee and you realize the POD is low on supplies. Stock up on everything you need early or the middle of the week so you don’t have to fight someone for the last box of Bagel Bites.

Meal Hacks

Here’s something college students search the most: dining hall meal hacks. There are many readily available online, but here’s a few I suggest! Also, make sure to make full use of the stir fry and pasta stations and the sandwich bar.

Hummus Pita: Get hummus (and any other toppings) from the salad bar and take it to the sandwich station and ask for a pressed pita!

Poor Man’s Migas: Breakfast is my favorite Mabee meal! Get some scrambled eggs made with all your favourite toppings from the omelet station add some homestyle potatoes and beans, and crush tortilla chips on top. Top it all with one of the salsas and a side of toast or corn tortillas, and you have a full breakfast!

Ice Cream Sandwich: If there’s one thing I miss about Mabee, it’s the chocolate chip cookies. Get a plate with two and add some vanilla soft serve in between!

Ice Cream Floats: You have a soda machine, and you have a soft-serve machine. Do what you will.

Make Use of Tiger Bucks

Tiger Bucks aren’t as well known as Bonus Bucks, but if you have relatives who insist on giving money in Tiger Bucks form, there’s lots you can do with it! Go crazy in the bookstore, use it at Bombay Bicycle Club, Chipotle (the Broadway location only), the original Taco Taco, Tycoon Flats, The Mix and many other places!

Visit Skyline
One place I never really visited until sophomore year (for some reason!) was Skyline. Not only is the view beautiful, but so is the food! Dine in for some warm and delicious food, or even take out. Some of my faves are the spinach and artichoke dip, the shrimp tortellini and the BBQ chicken flatbread!
