Last night the Association of Student Representatives (ASR) hosted its annual Speak Out to give students the chance to hear the candidates in action and ask them face-to-face questions before they go to the voting booths (actually tables in Coates and Mabee) next week.

It seemed like a healthy crowd and the candidates were genuinely enthusiastic and prepared to make their cases for the year ahead. Then, Pam Adornato, current president, asked the candidates to all come up on stage for the Q&A and a lot more truth came out.

There were roughly half a dozen people left in the audience; the crowd present had been mostly candidates. In what has become an annual tradition, members of the Trinitonian editorial board were in attendance to assess the candidates for our endorsements. This all changed when we saw the situation.
Instead of endorsing anyone for President (Rob Sender's the only one running for Vice President and he seemed a good sort) we would like to present the basics of the speeches given.

Adam Cason was concerned with improving the safety and security on campus, namely installing cameras in Prassel Garage. Cason also advocated bringing environmental concerns, especially recycling, to the forefront of campus innovation. In regards to student financing, he advocated reform and redistribution of the engorged ASR budget to better fund other student programs.

Maxwell Z. Fisher also mentioned the environment and encouraging students to conserve in their daily use of energy, such as light and water. He mentioned building school spirit and revisiting Sophomore College to make it more agreeable to everyone. He wanted to facilitate direct communication between senators and students. In summing up his campaign, Fisher said he wanted to "prevent University micromanagement."

Nick Shockey vowed to bring back the big issues to campus. Highlighting a plan to bring tailgating to athletic events, not just football but soccer too, he touted the opportunity at such gatherings to build community but also for student groups to fundraise through sales of concessions.

Shockey wanted to work towards programs that would make a difference in life on campus: recycling bins in each residence hall room, short term parking to lessen the stress of those running a quick errand and more healthy organic foods offered in dining facilities.

YouTube and FaceBook groups are innovative ways to get the word out, but they're no substitute for substance. Make sure, when you vote next week, it's for the person who cares about what you care about seeing get done.
