The Trinity baseball team gets thrown right into the fire this weekend as they take on Concordia University, always one of their toughest opponents. The team will make the trip up Interstate 35 on Friday for a 7 p.m. game, stay in Austin for a 3 p.m. game Saturday and then claim home field as both teams head back to San Antonio for a 2 p.m. game Sunday.
A grueling off-season consumed an extraordinary amount of time but pitcher Drew Bignall, senior recognizes the sacrifices that are necessary of a successful program. "Personally, as a pitcher, I feel that our workouts have been a huge step in the right direction for us," Bignall said.?"We trained hard in the weight room and hard on the field using new techniques, drills and shoulder regiments to prepare us for another season."
Concordia is a perennial powerhouse and with five games under their belt already, so Trinity can't underestimate their competition. "They are always a tough competitor and it will surely be a tough weekend," Bignall admitted.?"They have played a handful of games already, whereas this weekend will be our first set of games, but I think we're ready for it in every way."?
Although it may be early to speculate on the outcome of the season, this year's team shows a level of promise that rises above those of the last half decade. "The team as whole has more potential than I have seen in my four years at Trinity," Bignall stated,?"We have an incredible amount of talent and it can take us as far as we push it.? We have a lot of young talent led by veterans and that is always a solid combination."
Pitcher Ryan Poffenroth, aenior, agreed that the wealth of talent is unlike anything he's experienced at Trinity. "This year's team is much different than those of the past.? We have a lot more speed on the bases and better contact hitters.? We had a very good recruiting year, bringing in several freshmen that will instantly make a big?impact."
Head Coach Tim Scannell has taken a new approach to motivate his team this season with ideals of competitiveness and a complete lack of selfishness. "He loves to have the player who will do anything for the team and to win and that is what he has told us he wanted out of all of us," Bignall said. "It puts a better tone on?and off the field and really helps push a team in the right direction to win."
As for practice regiments, the team has stuck mostly with the basics. Concordia has been known to crowd the plate, so besides some minute pitching adjustments, the team has "just been trying to get back into the swing of things by scrimmaging ourselves, giving the hitters opportunities to see live pitching," Poffenroth said.?
The weekend holds the outcome of the Tiger's first series against Concordia University and despite the nerves of a season opener, the team has the confidence and the talent to bring home a 3-0 record.
