Last Wednesday brought bittersweet results for Trinity soccer fans, when the men's and women's teams both played their first NCAA tournament games.
The men's team, whose perfect record in the regular season ensured them home field advantage, shut out the University of Texas-Dallas Comets, ending the game with nine shots on goal versus Dallas' one. The women's team traveled to Abilene to play the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls, where they fought hard for 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, only to lose 4-2 on penalty kicks.
The men scored twice in the first 15 minutes facing off against Dallas, with Patrick Floeck scoring within six minutes and Ben Stewart pushing the Tiger's lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute.
"A cross was served in from the right side," said forward Floeck, junior, describing his first goal, "and Noe Casanova [junior] headed it back across the goal and I touched it in."
The Tigers defended well, denying Dallas any shots. Eventually, Trinity turned on the offensive power again when Floeck scored Trinity's third point in the 60th minute, assisted by midfielder Robert C'de Baca, senior. The last 15 minutes of the game brought Dallas a shot on goal and a few close kicks that elicited groans from the Trinity fans, but the Tiger defense kept the Comets at bay to end the game 3-0.
