Soccer's regular season is drawing to a close, with the four wins last weekend putting both the men's and the women's team one game away from the NCAA tournament. The men beat the University of the South-Sewanee (Tenn.) 5-1 on Friday, and Oglethorpe University (Ga.) 6-1 on Sunday, bringing their record to 17-0-0 and 9-0-0 SCAC, while the women beat Sewanee 1-0 and Oglethorpe 10-0, brining their record to 12-3-1 and 7-0-1 SCAC. Next Friday, both teams will play Southwestern University, but while the men's place in the NCAA tournament is assured, the women must tie or win their game to win the conference and a gain a postseason berth.
The women played Sewanee on Friday night in Tennessee, where the team is coached by former Trinity University soccer player Dylan Harrison. According to Assistant Coach Paul Rodriguez, a scoreless first half put the Tigers on edge until Captain and midfielder Claire Edwards, senior, scored unassisted in the second half, making the game's final score 1-0.
"[Sewanee] has improved a bit. They've had some good players, and they've had some mixed results but played pretty well," Rodriguez said. "We just didn't capitalize in the first half. But we managed to get it in the second off of a corner-kick, and then we managed to keep it 1-0."
On Sunday, the women shut out Oglethorpe 10-0, with both midfielder Michelle Grambeau, sophomore, and midfielder Brianna Young, sophomore, scoring a hat trick, and midfielder Jennifer Wray, senior, scoring two more goals.
"We capitalized on a lot of the goals right away. I think we scored five goals in 15 minutes," Grambeau said.
According to Rodriguez, while both games were exciting and important to SCAC standing, the game against Oglethorpe was more fun for the women.
"We've been looking to really punish a team and haven't had a chance to do it enough," Rodriguez said.
Now, the women's conference record of 7-0-1 means they have to either tie or beat Southwestern (7-1-0) next Friday to be ensured a place at the NCAA tournament.
