The Association of Student Representatives (ASR) held an open forum in the Fiesta Room on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in which students presented administrators with any questions or concerns they wanted addressed.
The administrators who participated in the event included: University President John R. Brazil; Vice President for Student Affairs Felicia Lee; Vice President for Information Resources and Administrative Affairs Chuck White; Vice President of Academic Affairs Michael Fischer; Vice President of Fiscal Affairs Craig McCoy; and Dean of Students and Director of Residential Life David Tuttle.
Junior Adam Cason, the ASR senator who arranged the event, said that ASR decided to set up the open forum to promote communication between students and administrators. According to Cason, "some people say that there is a big gap between the students and the administration, and so ASR is trying to find ways to bridge that gap."
Fischer said that he didn't think that the gap of communication was as big as he has seen it at other schools.
"We always need to make sure that we're communicating effectively with one another so that gap doesn't get any larger," Fischer said. "The students asked questions about important matters and asked them in an intelligent way."
Cason said that he thought an open forum was a good way to promote communication because literally anyone could raise an issue.
The first few questions that were asked concerned the administration's opinions on the existence and future of Greek Life on campus.
Cason, however, said he thought that overall there was a decent balance of questions.
The issues that were brought forward ranged from the future of Greek Life, to environmental issues on campus, to renovations in the Lightner and Thomas halls. Issues about academic scholarships, and longer library hours were also raised, along with questions about International Studies and the common curriculum.
The students were allowed to ask general questions to the board as a whole, such as: What are some new challenges that Trinity is facing? In addition, students could also direct questions to a specific person.
