Before the Trinity Tigers (No. 19) could focus on this weekend's rematch with the defending SCAC champion Millsaps Majors (No. 24), they were slated to host conference opponents The University of the South (Sewanee) Tigers.
The Tigers easily dispatched visiting Sewanee (1-6, 0-6 SCAC), scoring four first-half touchdowns en route to a 42-7 conference home victory.
Quarterback Blake Barmore, senior, threw for 220 yards (20-28) and three touchdowns, and Trinity cruised behind a suffocating defense that held to Sewanee to 40 yards rushing on 23 carries and only 218 total yards.
Barmore's carousel of wide receivers continued to spin against Sewanee. This time it was WR Chris Coleman, sophomore, with the standout performance.
Coleman hauled in a season high seven passes for 127 yards and a nifty 11 yard touchdown. With his career day, Coleman became the fourth different Trinity receiver this season to gain at least 100 yards in a game.
"[Coleman]'s a great receiver, teams have been covering him pretty good all year," Barmore said. "But they made a mistake and didn't cover him [Saturday], so I just hit him and he kept making big plays."
WR Shawn Thompson, junior, added five catches for 66 yards. His second touchdown catch of the game came on a perfectly thrown four yard fade pass from Barmore, making the score 28-0 Trinity with 2:31 remaining in the first half.
Barmore led the offense for one more touchdown drive in the third quarter to push the lead to 35-0, and then pulled off his pads and watched from the sidelines as the rest of the home team finished off the visiting Sewanee Tigers.
The win moved Trinity to 6-1, 3-1 on the season and set up this week's decisive showdown against defending SCAC champion Millsaps in Jackson, Miss.
Trinity played Millsaps last year in Jackson, on the season's final Saturday with the SCAC championship and dual playoff aspirations hanging in the balance. The game, however, was never close.
