DRAGGING OUT THE GOOD TIMES: The crowd of spectators rushes the stage during the last performance of the SDA and Zeta Chi's fall semester drag show held in the chapel courtyard. Over 200 students attended this past Wednesday's charity event, which featured several activities and contests and raised $394 for the San Antonio AIDS Foundation.

Last week, the lines of gender got a little blurry on Trinity University's Murchison Tower plaza, often referred to as the chapel courtyard. On Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m., the day before National Coming Out Day, the Sexual Diversity Alliance (SDA) and Zeta Chi sorority presented the fall semester drag show.
The drag show included many contests including a race to orally apply a condom to a banana, finding Hershey's Kisses inside cream pies, drag queen trivia and, of course, the drag dance acts themselves.
Harry Haines, a professor of communication and member of the judging panel for the show, said that this was the most fun he has ever had at a church.
"It was truly a celebratory event. Drag works best when it reveals the contrived nature of gender-specific costuming and the culturally structured nature of gender identity" Haines said in an e-mail.
Haines continued, "I was utterly thrilled to see so many Trinity students bouncing their booties around in the spontaneous dance eruption! I wish my knees still allowed me to boogie with the best!"
The student turnout to the drag show grew beyond the SDA's expectations.
"In the fall drag show last year, we had 120 people, so we requested 150 chairs this year. So we had 150 chairs and we had even more people standing," said Sophomore Patrick Nuttall, SDA president.
Nuttall estimated that about 250 Trinity students attended the show.
With the impressive turnout, the SDA raised $394, all of which went towards the San Antonio AIDS Foundation where it will be used for education, testing and hospice care. According to Senior Derek Billnitzer, the co-coordinator and host(ess) of the drag show, this year's fall show raised twice as much money as last year's.
