As the presidential race begins earlier and earlier, it is inevitable that one begins to imagine the potentials of a new national leader. In the past, the Trinitonian has endorsed ASR candidates; today we take a further step in endorsing Stephen Colbert in his bid for U.S. president. Before rolling your eyes, stop and consider the potential for greatness.
Colbert began as a humble reporter on Comedy Central's The Daily Show. Developing an aptitude for reporting on such wide topics as the economy, "This Week in God" and all varieties of social welfare, he then tackled the larger task of hosting his own show. The Colbert Report has brought together liberals and conservatives alike night after night, on the set and in front of their television sets.
It is hard to respect our Congress's constant bickering and blatantly political maneuvering, but Colbert shows an uncanny ability to converse with all sides and people of all backgrounds. Amy Goodman from Democracy Now!, Senator Byron Dorgon, economist Paul Krugman and scientist Richard Dawkins have all been guests on the show-and that's just in the last month! In a day and age when the president refuses to speak with certain world leaders and candidates are constantly quizzed on their diplomatic etiquette, Colbert stands out as an individual who is not afraid to sit down with the other side.
In an online poll conducted on his Web site colbertnation.com, Jon Stewart is winning the public's heart for Colbert's potential running mate. Imagine the possibility of this duo on the world stage! While it cannot be denied that both of these men are comedians, it is impossible to effectively satirize something that you know nothing about. In fact, both must spend hours every day watching the news, reading newspapers and staying abreast of world events. Keep in mind that our current president claims that he doesn't read the news.
A Colbert/Stewart ticket would represent such a range of understanding for what Red Americans and Blue Americans are able to laugh about, it is impossible to imagine that they wouldn't also be able to deliver a course of action that would meld these perspectives into some semblance of viable policy. In fact, Colbert has announced he will be running on both the Democratic and Republican tickets in his home state of South Carolina.
Think this all sounds ridiculous? Mikal Watts visited campus last week because he said that he believes in the power of the youth vote to make a difference. Think of the potential you have if you're over 18 by next November to impact the election in this country with your vote. The editorial board urges students, staff and faculty alike to fully educate themselves about the wide range of candidates that have entered the race.
Before you decide you aren't a part of the Colbert Nation, think about what sort of nation you would want to be a part of.
