Last weekend was good to Trinity Soccer. The Tigers won a total of three nonconference games between the men's and women's teams.
The men (9-0-0), ranked No. 1 in the nation by National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III, beat Texas Lutheran University 2-1 in Seguin on Sunday, while the women (6-3-0) won twice, beating Schreiner University 12-2 in Kerville on Friday, and Texas Lutheran University 3-0 in Seguin on Sunday.
"[Texas Lutheran] came out working hard," said captain and center midfielder Kyle Altman, senior, of the men's game. "They created chances but they didn't take many of them. It was a battle from the start."
Altman scored Trinity's first point on a penalty kick in the first half. Captain and midfielder Tyrone Petrakis, junior, scored Trinty's second point at the start of the second half. Texas Lutheran scored their only point after Trinity scored twice, on a free kick from Andrew Latiolais which Head Coach Paul McGinlay called "almost unstoppable," due to the angle at which it entered the goal.
The team had spent the previous week resting, practicing twice rather than four times, in a regularly scheduled brake that McGinlay gives the team to keep them in prime condition for the entirety of the season.
"We, in preparation, had much more rest than we had exercise because we just came off a two game travel weekend to Alabama and Mississippi, and we were eight games into the season with a lot of activity back to back, so it was an easier week physically, in combination with it being an exam week," Altman said. "And the outcome was that we went to Texas Lutheran on Sunday for a non-conference game, outplayed them and out-shot them, but won the game with the smallest of margins. There wasn't concern about the attitude of the team, there wasn't concern about the work effort of the team, but having some time off did affect our decision making and our sharpness in a negative way."
According to Altman, the men's team intends to improve upon their 19-1-1 record last year.
