Last Saturday, Sept. 22, the Trinity cross country team competed in the Little State Championships at Buffalo Gap State Park in Abilene, Texas, where the women took first place overall and the men took second, behind the University of Texas at Tyler. Trinity's women scored 17 points, two points shy of the perfect score that they achieved when they won the race in 2006, and Trinity's men scored just four points less than UT Tyler. The best finishing woman was Emily Loeffler, junior, who won the race for the second year in a row, and the best finishing man was Chass Armstrong, sophomore, who came in forth in the men's race. The women ran six kilometers, while the men ran eight, in a race that pulls DIII teams from different conferences all over Texas to compete against one another.
"Everyone ran faster than they did at Texas State," said Head Coach Jenny Breuer. "And this is a much harder course."
The women had six runners in the top ten finishers, including Loeffler, who came in first at 23:49, Caitlin Masse, first-year, who came in second at 23:54, and Leda McDaniel, senior, who took forth at 24:29.
"[The race] is important recruiting-wise, since we were able to beat everybody so bad on the women's side. It's never bad to dominate. It's definitely a feel-good meet," Breuer said.
Loeffler took first in the race in spite of its being her first race of the season, due to tendonitis of the foot, a condition with which she is still dealing.
"It bothered me a little," said Loeffler. "The thing with tendonitis is you have to ice it all the time and take Ibuprofin. I was mostly fine."
Trinity's men took four spots in the top ten. The best finisher for Trinity's men was Armstrong, sophomore, who came in forth at 26:51, while Bryant Wright, sophomore, took fifth with 27:15, Jeremy Daum, senior, took seventh, Zach Brush, first-year, took eighth, and Ryan Luby, first-year, took ninth.
"The men have been running a lot lately," said Breuer, "and so we didn't know how they'd react to running on tired legs. We knew we could finish anywhere in first, second, or third. But we didn't expect to be that close to UT Tyler. If someone had finished here places above, we would have had it."
