The Project recruits first years for leadership roles

Students make 1-semester committment to leadership program, organize campus events

First year students at Trinity with an interest in gaining leadership experience have the option of becoming involved in the new version of the First Year Leadership Project (FYLP), the Project.

For 2006, the Project has undergone a few changes from its former First Year Leadership Project standing.

"The program can help you learn about yourself, develop an awareness of the community around you and foster positive change that will impact that community," said Residential Life Coordinator Catherine Storey.

According to Storey, the program is now based on the Social Change Model of Leadership, which comes from a curriculum outside of Trinity.

"In this model, leadership is considered a process, not a position," Storey said. "You can be a leader anywhere and at any level of an organization. We are attempting to help the students become stronger leaders."

First years that become involved with the Project make a semester-long commitment to the program.

According to Storey, some students may choose to apply skills that they learn through this program in various organizations on campus or on a smaller scale, such as volunteer opportunities in the San Antonio community or in day-to-day interactions with those around them.

In the past, the Project was not always run under this format, according to one of the group coordinators, Junior Britni Henderson.

"They selected 16 people that they thought would be good leaders. It was a very selective process, but they decided to change that two years ago so that the program would be more inclusive," Henderson said.

According to Storey, there was also a decision to remove the emphasis on each group participating in the program completing an end of semester project.

Storey said that this particular element was removed so that the groups could focus more on the development of themselves as leaders and not have as much pressure to get a large project done instead.
