Dear Editor,

We know that you're dying to know the answers to a couple of questions, so we thought that we would enlighten you. What is Phi Beta Kappa, you ask? Is that one of those fraternities? What color are their jerseys?

With so many honor societies competing for our membership (dues) these days, it is hard to know which ones are for serious. Take John, for example. Poor Johnny boy was invited to join Mortar Board and turned it down because he was sick of paying dues and attending boring inductions.

We almost committed the same error last year when we were invited to join Phi Beta Kappa our junior year. At that point, we were completely unaware of Phi Beta Kappa's existence. It wasn't until we were asked to meet in the president's conference room to help select new members that we finally realized its significance. Good thing we weren't like poor Johnny boy.

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and largest academic honor society in the country. Trinity is home to one of 270 chapters across the United States. Some famous PBK members include John Updike, Francis Ford Coppola, and presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush Sr. Phi Beta Kappa is widely recognized and highly esteemed within both the academic and professional communities. One Trinity faculty member told us that Phi Beta Kappa is "for life" because employers acknowledge that it is a significant achievement and not just resume filler.

Enticed? Intrigued? Well, prepare to be disappointed. You may be one of the amazing Trinity students who cannot be considered because they fail to meet the math and language requirements. This year, there was a senior with a 10.0 (OK, so maybe it was a 4.0) who was ineligible simply because he or she neglected to take one measly calculus class. 4.0 student, if you're out there, get your act together! Take that calculus and third-semester language class, or you might soon be drowning your sorrows at Java City with poor ol' Johnny Boy. If anyone is interested in learning more, contact Cara Taylor, Trinity's Phi Beta Kappa secretary.

I never once took a calculus class and I'm Phi Beta Kappa, effective this year. So, I would have to say either this genuis 4.0 student did nothing outside of the classroom (which is VERY possible, hence: 4. (Continued…)
