Trinity's track and field team is coming off a strong finish from last season. Christyn Schumann, senior, captured her second-straight NCAA Division III Outdoor High Jump title and third overall national title.
Schumann along with Kate Dawson, junior, and Julie Lowstetter, senior, will lead the Tigers this year.
Head Coach Jenny Breuer is looking forward to claiming meet titles and possibly winning conference championships on both the men's and women's sides.
"We hope to win the conference championship. If everyone stays healthy, we should have a pretty good shot," Breuer said.
Last year, Stephanie Hankins, senior, received an injury the week before the conference meet. Hankins was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Female Athlete of the Year in both 2003 and 2004.
The men's and women's teams both placed second at the SCAC meet last year.
Despite a disappointing finish, the men have plenty of talent on this year's team. Zach Byars, junior, has been named to the all-conference team for the past three years in the high jump.
The men's team returns two SCAC individual champions and five members of the All-SCAC team.
"This year we're looking really strong. We have a lot of people coming back," Byars said.
The women's team also has plenty of returning talent, including three national meet qualifiers.
Last year at the national championship meet, Lowstetter felt little pressure. She went into the meet hoping to improve her jump and cheer on her teammates, including Schumann.
"It was cool just to watch my teammate kill the competition," Lowstetter said.
This year's new class has boosted team membership to 67 athletes.
"We have a really good class, both men and women. I'm excited to see what they can do," Breuer said.
However, Breuer refused to speculate on individual first years, stating that she did not want to jinx them in the upcoming meet.
Both teams will compete in the Trinity Invitational on Saturday. The field events begin at 9 a.m. and the running events start at 11:30 a.m.
