After a special runoff election Tuesday, Junior Manny Gonzalez won the Association of Student Representatives (ASR) presidency over Sophomore Doug Coe.

Gonzalez received a majority 374 of the 657 votes, over Coe's 283, reflecting a difference of 91 votes. Gonzalez received 56.9 percent while Coe received 43.1 percent.

"It's been a long month. I knew it would be a close election; Doug is a good guy," Gonzalez said. "I look forward to working with Vice President Katie Hampton [junior] and the senators, and I think we're going to have a really great year."

Results were announced late Tuesday evening in the Tigers' Den by the ASR Election Committee.

Voting occurred in Coates University Center that afternoon and again in Mabee Dining Hall that evening.

A runoff election was necessary because none of the five candidates in last week's general election received a majority of the vote. Gonzalez and Coe were last week's top contenders, with 364 votes (41.7 percent) and 254 votes (29.1 percent), respectively.

Coe said he was disappointed with the results, but not discouraged.

"This means I won't have to deal with you all year," Coe said jokingly to a Trinitonian reporter after the results were disclosed. "But, I look forward to continuing to contribute to campus throughout the year."

Outgoing ASR President and Election Committee member Patrick Disney, junior, said the committee were pleasantly surprised by the election turnout.

"I was extremely surprised by the turnout," Disney said. "I never would have imagined 657 votes."
